more reading bonus, check out my recent essay for Anthrow Circus, “On (Not) Climbing Djibouti’s Devil’s Island”

Also to the Americans among us, Happy July Fourth!

The time has come.

I will not be writing here for the next month.

Goodbye Djibouti.

At some point even writers run out of things to say. I’ve said and written a lot of things about life here. You find it at Rachel Pieh Jones under the “Published” tab.

For now, I will leave you with a photo from the beginning and one from the end. Thank you for reading along. Djibouti has given me many things and one I never anticipated was this writing career. Thank you, reader, for making that a reality.

First trip to the beach in the Horn: Berbera, Somaliland. 2003.

Last trip as a whole family to see the sites in the Horn, Djibouti. 2023, with our Djiboutian-baby addition.

No matter what comes next, we will always be the Djibouti Joneses.

We’ll be waiting to hear more when you’re ready. Peace and courage for all the feelings and surprises to come as you transition.

It must be a bittersweet transition. Even I'm sad you are leaving home in Djibouti and happy you are coming to a new home in the USA. God be with you.
